When
we arrived we noticed that Mike (the fishery manager) had greatly
improved a lot of the swims with either new fishing platforms or by
building up the swim banks so that they were level to stand on (quite a
bonus for us old 'uns that suffer from aches and pains from standing on
sloping ground for hours on end!!) Added
to this, he, very generously, donated two packs of venison for our
first and second winners - so there was all to fish for!
The day promised to be
great! Trout were rising over a becalmed lake and it was truly
beautiful. Only the sun was missing but at least it was mild!
For
once I didn't take pictures, but started fishing immediately. On the
second cast, with a floating dry fly, I had a tremendous rise and was
immediately
into a nice 2 1/2 Lb. Rainbow. This was
going to be my day!
I thought I'd better slow down a bit, so I got out my camera and was
just sorting it out when Graham and John Beer arrived.
"My God" said John, "there's a dead fish floating in the water,
Belly-up!"
"I hope so" I said "I've just tapped it over the head, after catching
it."
"Why did you throw it back?" he asked.
"It's
tethered by string to the bank -- when I fished in Scotland, I used a
branch of heather, but you don't have that down here. Leaving them in
the water keeps them fresher, you know."
Well, they all started fishing and everyone started catching fish!
I was kept very busy getting a lot of photos for the web-site!!
By 11 o'clock most of the others, except me and Bob, had weighed in
their brace of fish for the monthly competition.
Terry
had left for his dinner date, with his family, after catching his
second fish, leaving me to do the honors with the rest of the
weighing-in.
John Beer then caught, possibly, the best Brown Trout that will be
caught this year, and out came my camera again!!
The
sun appeared out of the clouds and I decided it was time to seriously concentrate on
getting my second fish - at least I'd got another 4 hours.
Once again that last fish eluded me - I even lost possibly the best
rainbow, in the match, at the net!!! I
fished on 'til 4pm to no avail - most of the others were Cheering (or
was it Jeering) at my frantic efforts and willing me to catch my last
fish so that they could go home. But at least I did get some
pictures to put up on the web-site!! I kept them guessing to the end but finally conceded at 2 minutes to 4 pm. Bob
Langmead took the winner's, monthly, plaque and the Haunch of Venison,
whilst John Beer was very pleased with his stewing steak.
On reflection, this job as Webmaster, gives me a fantastic
excuse for my lack of luck/skill with this fishing lark!!
'Til we meet again,
John

"I'm sure its a Brown - look at the

Sure
enough it was a splendid, sleek, fighting 3 Lb Brown Trout.
